As a public employee for the city of Eugene, Oregon, Ben spent decades caring for his staff. His years of experience made him an expert on Occupational Safety and Health guidelines; he taught courses on employee safety well into his 60s.

Whether volunteering or reviewing scholarships at a local community college, Ben remains active in the community. “TAF is a reminder that there are a lot of good people out there,” he said.

For more than 40 years, Ben has called the Beaver State home. With mountains and trails all around, Ben considers Oregon the perfect place to relax and enjoy his retirement with his wife.

“The simple things in life are most important,” Ben said. “It really comes down to loved ones and the beauty of Mother Nature.”

About 10 years ago, Ben began feeling unwell. He had aches and occasionally experienced double vision. Doctors at Oregon Health and Science University put him through a series of tests. When Ben heard the diagnosis, he needed it repeated — he had never heard of it. He had Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome (LEMS), an autoimmune disease impacting his vision.

Ben immediately began treatment to reduce the frequency of the double vision. Through a drug trial, Ben had access to his medication — which typically costs thousands of dollars — free of charge. But the end of the trial put his access at risk.

“I didn’t know what I would do,” Ben said. “Even with my medical insurance and Medicare, the cost would be prohibitive.”

Ben’s pharmacist referred him to The Assistance Fund’s (TAF’s) Lambert-Eaton Myasthenic Syndrome Financial Assistance Program. The program provides financial assistance for copays, deductibles, premiums, and ground travel costs. Within minutes, he was approved.

“I’m so thankful for TAF,” Ben said. “I couldn’t possibly afford my treatment without them. Because of TAF, I can continue living in my home without worrying about how I will pay the mortgage.”

Ben maintains his positive attitude by focusing on the things he can do, rather than those he can’t.

“I can still get around the house and drive around town, but I can’t drive on freeways,” he said. “I make an effort to focus on the things I can do that bring joy, beauty, and meaning to my life.”

Whether volunteering or reviewing scholarships at a local community college, Ben remains active in the community. During the pandemic, Ben and his friends relied on his large garage to safely gather.

“One couple would sit in one corner we’d sit in the other, and we would have a cup of coffee or glass of wine,” Ben said.

And with his scenic surroundings, Ben can often be found with his wife among the trees, trails, and local forests. Thanks to TAF, he has peace of mind.

“TAF is a reminder that there are a lot of good people out there,” he said. “That’s what triumphs and makes the world go around.”

Our vision is to see the day when no person goes without treatment because of an inability to pay.
